Lesson 16: Ring Knot Stitch, A Step-by-Step Guide with FREE Cherry Blossom Embroidery Pattern

Welcome back for another exciting lesson of our Hand Embroidery Stitches series! Today, we're going to explore the delightful Ring Knot Stitch—a fun variation of the French Knot stitch.

Just like with the French Knot stitch, there are a couple of things to note: tie the thread on both ends is better than just on one end, and we will need to use both hands.

how to ring knot stitch embroidery

  1. To begin, bring the needle up through the back of the fabric to where you want to have your knot.
  2. Hold the thread taut using the hand that’s not holding the needle and place the needle in front of the thread.
  3. Wrap the thread around the needle once toward you.
  4. Take the needle down somewhere very close to the starting point.
  5. Don’t push the needle all the way yet, and this is this is where it’s different from the French Knot stitch. Instead of pulling the thread tightly to tighten the loop, let it remain loose. Adjust the loop to the desired size
  6. After you're happy with the size , gently push the needle all the way through the wrap to secure it. That's it!

I would begin stitching the primary flowers as indicated in the pattern, then fill in any gaps with additional knots wherever you desire. The goal here is to create a profusion of flowers, so there won't be any mistakes. You can easily conceal any unwanted loops by make new ones.

Aim to position the secured knot at the center of your flowers for a uniform effect. It may require a bit of practice to place the loops exactly where you want them, so take your time until you get the hang of it.
